Note: 2 3 Co heiress of father. Brought Moorstone, Devon, to the Wyndhams. Also brought Orchard, now called Orchard Wyndham, in Somerset. --- The plaintiff?s claim was based upon the alleged heirship of Elizabeth Sydenham to Edmund of Sampford, as daughter of John, son of Margaret, daughter of John, son of Joan, daughter of Edmund, son of Edmund. A contemporary memorandum, preserved at Orchard Wyndham, sets out her descent in greater detail:- ?Edmund of Sampford had issue Edmund, who had issue Joan, whom John atte Wille married and had issue John atte Wille, who married Joan daughter and heiress of John Bernevyle, and had issue Margaret late the wife of John Gambon, who had issue John and Idonia the wife of John Beare. John son of John [Gambon] and Margaret married Elizabeth daughter of Robert Kirkham, and had issue Elizabeth now the wife of John Sydenham? --- As the inscription states, Elizabeth died on 1 January 1571, which by today's reckoning would be 1572, since the date then was being figured from March 25. Sir John erected the tomb in memory of his wife. He himself died in 1574 and was succeeded at Orchard by his grandson, John, the son of Florence and John Windham.Page: Page 152
