Round the verge of this tomb in Harewood church, on a brass fillet, (torn away in the civil wars) was the following inscription:
"Hic Jacet Willielmus Gascoigne, Nuper Capitalis Iusticar de Banco Henrici, Nuper Regis Angliae; Et Elize, uxor ejus qui quidem Willielmus, Obet die dominica 17th Madie Decembris, Anno domini 1412.
The English, - "Here lies Wm. gascoigne, lately Chief Justice of the Bench of Henry the Fourth, King of Scotland, and Elizabeth his wife; which William died on Sunday the 17th Day of December, in the Year of our Lord, 1412.
Elizabeth Mowbray was mother of William Gascoigne's son and heir William, but it was William's other [seems to be some dispute as to the order of wives] wife Joan de Pickering who was mother of Agnes, wife of Robert Constable of Flamborough, Yorks.
Henry IV by Shakespeare has Gascoigne as a character. (It is a myth that he once imprisoned the young Prince Henry, later Henry V.)
