A year later, November 13, 1943, Mr. and Mrs. Fonda received a letter from Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox, saying that inasmuch as a year had elapsed since their son had been reported missing following the participation of his ship in the third battle of Savo Island, and despite the subsequent searches made for the personnel after that battle and due to the length of time that had elapsed without any indication of his survival he was reluctantly forced to the conclusion that their son was deceased, and his death was presumed to have occurred on November 14, 1943, pursuant to Section 5 of Public Law 490. Beside his parents Seaman Fonda is survived by one brother Richard Fonda, Fultonville; four sisters, Mrs. Frederick Engle, Fonda; Mrs. William Cromer, Johnstown; Mrs. William Poultney, Tribes Hill-Johnstown Road, and Mrs. Frank Paine, Fultonville.
