Although peaceful and mild mannered by nature, his friends say, his favorite pastime was to gallop vicariously through the blood and thunder adventures of the western frontier. Wednesday, celebrating prohibition repeal, Fonda found himself surrounded in a tavern by hordes of hostile Indians. He opened fire but was subdued before anyone was injured. An hour later, police said he told them, an apparent Indian by the name of Joseph Kohout, 27, refused to take a friendly drink, Fonda shot him.
