Margaret Kelly, {born c.1800 (before 1/1801[4])[2,4,5,29,30] (Dob of 1803 given at her first marriage[32] is inconsistent with other sources.)}, baptised 5/8/1798, Saint Mary, St. Marylebone Road, St. Marylebone, London, England.[1] Was a resident of the Marylebone Workhouse in 1823.[3,4] On the 16/5/1823, the directors ordered that 58 individuals be discharged from the Workhouse, including Margaret.[3] They were to be clothed and given a small sum of money (4 shillings for the women).[3] Margaret apparently had a reprieve since she was still a resident on 19/7/1823 when she led a group of three women out of the workhouse, stealing clothing belonging to the workhouse and it's employees and also a sum of money.[4] They stayed in hiding for some time at "Mrs Pierce's", a brothel on George St, St Giles, London.[4] For the next four months Margaret and fellow escapee Margaret Bryan "worked the streets", the third escapee, Sarah Wood, serving as their servant.[4] Sarah eventually returned to the workhouse and confessed.[4] Margaret was arrested at Church Lane, St Giles, London, sometime in November or early December.[4] Workhouse minutes of 5/12/1823 mention that Margaret and her accomplices had been arrested and would "be prosecuted .. at the next [Quarter] Session."[3] She was tried in London, 14/1/1824, found guilty and sentenced, along with Margaret Bryan, to be transported to Australia for seven years as a convict.[2-5,26,28-30] Departed London, 1/10/1824,[26,28] on the "Grenada", arrived in Sydney, NSW, 23/1/1825.[2,5,26-30] Was 4'10" tall and listed as a housemaid/laundress by occupation.[2] Margaret was listed in the 1828 census as a "government servant".[5] Received a "Certificate of Freedom", 7/2/1831, #31/0076.[27] Married 1st Francis Allman[27] by banns with the consent of the Governor, 5/3/1827, at St John's C/E, Parramatta, by Rev.
