As with any genealogical effort, this is a work-in-progress and includes information shared by various family members. While every attempt to document all sources has been made, there are many opportunities for human error and conflicts within the sources themselves. Any privacy concerns will be addressed - refer Privacy Policy. I would love to hear from anyone who shares common ancestry.

Refer Fred Clarke's Rootsweb database [email not current in Jul 2006] for details of parents, etc. and which advises : Maria was the first child of Thomas and Anne Cheshire, born 1st August, 1792. As Thomas Markwell and the Cheshires lived in close proximity to each other, it is presumed that it is there that Thomas met Maria and subsequently married her in 1807. They travelled from the Hawkesbury to Sydney for the ceremony and, being pregnant, it must have been very arduous for Maria. The Rev. Henry Fulton performed the ceremony. The Rev. Fulton was himself transported to the colony as an Irish political rebel and eventually became the colony Chaplain having replaced the Rev. Samuel Marsden. He later built the first church and school in the Hawkesbury area.

Fred Clarke's < a href="http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:618580&id=I0075">Rootsweb database[email not current in Jul 2006] for details of extensive details on Thomas' conviction, parents, siblings etc. and which advises : ... When Thomas was 37 years old, he married Maria who was 15 years and about 7 months pregnant. They were married by the Rev. Henry Fulton at St. Peter's Church, Sydney. Neither could write and therefore made their mark. After 3 years of marriage and the birth of the first two children, Maria left Thomas with the children. This could have been caused by the hardships of the day and her very young age. It is not known how long Maria was away but it was 14 years before the next child was born. Maria died in 1830 leaving Thomas with 4 children under the age of 7 years, the youngest being one month old. The children of Thomas and Maria Markwell married into respected families; Sophia to Henry Hewitt, a man of note being a successful farmer, publican and councillor; Elizabeth to George Pitt Wood, a descendent of an old and respected English family; Ellen Maria to William Farlow from a well known pioneering family; Thomas George to Ann Eather Williams, a well respected and successful Hawkesbury farmer and one of the first to take stock over the range to the Liverpool Plains (also with George Cheshire); John to Frances Skuthorpe from a family well known for its horsemen and Mary Ann to Thomas Marsden, related to the Rev. Samuel Marsden.
