ID: I11157
Name: Hubert ('Hugh' forebearer of the HYSSYE family) HUSSEY
Sex: M
Birth: 0998 in Normandy, France
Immigration: 1066 accompanied Duke William to Conquest of England
Note: Hubert HUSSEY is believed to be the paternal ancestor of Thomas HYSSYE born about 1515 of Wantage, Berkshire (Surname variations of the name include also: Hissie; Hissy; Hizzie; Hizzey; Hyssy; Hissey and others).
The Husseys' living in England and lreland are reputed to descend from Hubert Hussey who came over from Normandy with William the Conquerer. He married Hellen, the illegitimate daughter of William's uncle Richard Ill, 5th Duke of Normandy. Hussey families were associated with various manors in Berkshire in the time of Edward I, but were mainly in Kent, Dorset, Shropshire and Ireland. It was at the Battle of Hastings on 14 Oct 1066 William of Normandy 'William the Conqueror' seized power. Ancestor of the Husseys of Dorset and Kent. [Falaise Roll, p. 121]
My cousin Grace Douglass wrote an article in 1998 for 'The Ezzy Family Newsletter' titled WHAT ARE OUR ROOTS? in which she referred to the November Newsletter last year, [No.33] - more from Rae Williams in England - January, 1997. 'Rae had written to the College of Heralds asking them for information on the HUSSY name & they have now replied giving her information on where they have found evidence of the name being used in the various counties of England [none in Scotland] &, in some cases, the year when the name first appears in Records. They are:- ca1614 Nottinghamshire: 1623 Shropshire: 1623 Dorset: 1634 Lincolnshire: 1633 London: Sussex: Yorkshire: Kent: Wiltshire: Somerset: Dorset: Devon: Middlesex: Hampshire: Ireland: & Berkshire -- OF COURSE!
Rae continues on to say:- I have searched the I.G.I. for variations of the name. Its almost possible to put it in a nutshell, but we have now traced almost every single Hissey/Hussey in Berkshire and know just how the various lines slot together. In other words we haven't just done our own lines, [Rae is writing here about her friend who is also of Hissey/Hussey descent & also ex-Australia, & they are researching together on this project of tracing their ancestry] but every single Hissey/Hussey individual in Berkshire! None has better info than the College of Heralds & the list confirms what we felt, that the original family on the Berkshire/Oxon border [now Oxon] didn't come from the North, but from the West, i.e., Wiltshire, & I'll have to see if the College of Heralds is prepared to provide any pedigrees. Also we need to see if Dorset/Somerset/Devon are connected also. I now want to see if any Tudor/Stuart Wills survive with a hope the Berkshire family will be mentioned. [We are sure that Readers will all be looking forward to the continuing saga on this one!] The following information was also sent to Rae from the College of Heralds on the Family History of the Huseys.
Lineage: The family of HUSEY is reputedly descended from HUBERT HUSE who came over from Normandy with William the Conqueror. He married HELEN, illegitimate daughter of Richard 111, 5th Duke of Normandy, William's uncle. See HUSEY-HUNT late of COMPTON CASTLE - Burke's Landed Gentry 1906 and 1925 Editions, Hutchin's History of Dorset & the Visitation of Dorset 1623. A brief memoir of the Husey family was compiled by the Reverend W.H.M. Church and was dated 17 May 1871. Compton Castle was rebuilt in the Gothick [sic] taste between 1825 & 1830 by John Hubert Hunt .
The information sent to Rae by the College of Heralds continues on to list the descendants of Hubert Huse to about 1298. They included in their number, William who was killed by the Saracens in the Crusades, Hubert who was called Sir Hubert le Goupyle, a Knight of Rhodes, & his brother, James, also a Knight of Rhodes. Henry Huse who held the Manors of Figheldean, Eblington, Stapleford, Knytheton, Titcombe and Sutton & whose son, Geoffrey was Sheriff for the County of Oxford, & granddaughter, Cicele, who was a nun at Wilton Abbey. The list concludes with Ralph Huse of Sutton Abbas, Dorset, living in 1289 who married a daughter of William Beauchamp, Earl of Warwick.
We are not suggesting that these people from long ago may be part of our Readers' Lineage, or that they form the Roots of our William's Family Tree, but there is a possibility, and one day, with Rae's continuing efforts, we may bridge the gap.'
Additional Research : One Henry de la Huesse or Hoese was a witness to a Deed of Grant by which Fulk de Coudray transferring the Manors of Sherborne Coudray, now known as the Vyne. (around 1240?)
It was at Wantage that King Alfred the Great was born in 849. The town did not exist as such at the time, but the site of today’s Wantage was occupied by one of the Royal Palaces of Wessex. Alfred grew up there and King Alfred’s Spring, west of the town, was where he supposedly used to bathe. It was said to have been at Wantage that Alfred started the education for which he became famous. When he was twelve his mother, Queen Osburga, showed Alfred and his three elder brothers a beautifully illuminated book of Saxon poetry. She promised it to the first of the Royal Princes who could learn to read it. Of course Alfred won the book, and thenceforth his appetite for knowledge was unstoppable.

See 'The Coudray Family' An Extract by Mary Sharp & W.O. Clinton The larger and more important of the two Manors contained within the Parish of Padworth, sometimes distinguished by the name of Coudray's Manor.. is recorded in Domesday Book. The earliest mention by name of the Coudray family is in ...a Deed of Grant by which Fulk de Coudray transferred the Manors of Sherborne Coudray, now known as the Vyne, and that of Padworth to Maud de Herriard and Nicholas her son ... The two families were connected as Fulk de Coudray's mother had married as her second husband Roger, a son of the Maud here mentioned. Among the witnesses of the Deed are Robert de Offington (Ufton) and Henry de la Huesse or Hoese (who must have been of the family of the smaller Manor of Padworth). Robert de Offington is known to have been living in 1240, which gives us a clue to the date of this transaction......Fulk de Coudray died in 1251.
