I was browsing the roots web Austin List and ran across your post of Aug 21, 1998 regarding Samuel Austin, Loyalist. How sure are you that he was from Virginia? Look over the following and tell me what you think. Regards, Scot Austin
I have the following family in my database. The information came from Edith Austin Moores manuscript on the descendants of John Austin of New London and Stamford, CT, who emigrated from England in 1647. It seems to me that the similarity of names of your Samuel's children and this Samuel's siblings is too close for coincidence, especially the name Hurley. There was a lot of enmity created by Samuel's Loyalist stance, as his brothers and uncles were mostly revolutionary soldiers and officers. His Uncle Levinas Austin and possibly some children of Uncles Silas Austin and Job Austin adopted the surname Anson to disassociate themselves from him.[SIC The Samuel John Austin from Queens Co., NB was also known by this name so it must be just another variation of spelling.(AEK)]

I do not know the sources of all of this, the statement on his death may be as a result of being omitted from a will which could mean he was disowned rather than deceased. Also the following information on this family was gathered by Betty Paulson from Idaho, largely, I believe from the FHL in Salt Lake. She and I both are descended from John # 31 above, who married Tamsen Mead and moved to Manchester, VT after the war.
