  • ID: I0013
  • Name: Joseph Lawrence
  • Sex: M
  • Birth: 25 AUG 1786 in VA.
  • Death: 20 OCT 1840 in Rutherford County TN.
  • Note:
From the Samuel Lawrence Family Bible, it is known that Joseph Lawrence who
migrated from Caroline to Rutherford Co. was born 25 Aug 1786, so potentially
he could be the eldest of the males aged 16-25. However, this is not clear, as
can seen below on the Caroline Co. 1820 Census:

Caroline Co., VA 1820 Census, pg. 171A (350)

    Lawrence, Joseph 30(0)010-00100-00
    Lawrence, Samuel 31(0)130-20100-03
    Lawrence, Archibald 20(0)010-10100-00

Here we see that Samuel Lawrence still has four males, though now three are
aged 26-45, and one is aged 16-25 (probably born in 1794 - the "as of" dates
shifted from census to census, so that could explain the slight disparity in
aging - a frequent occurrence when working with censuses. This suggest the same
four males occur on both censuses. Meanwhile, Archibald and Joseph Lawrence
are listed next to Samuel, suggesting they were all related. The above
information tends to imply that Joseph and Archibald are not included on the Caroline
Co. 1810 Census, and thus may have migrated in from another county - some time
between 1810 and 1820 - to be near relatives (There are of course other
    possibilities.).

Archibald is known to have married a Fanny Peatross (a family that was long
in Caroline Co.). Many marriage bonds from Caroline Co. survive, including
    their's:

Laurence, Archibald - Peatross, Fanny, 4 September 1813

(Source: VA Library card files, Marriage Bonds 1810-16, AC. No. 2447, p. 83)

As referenced, the Virginia Library has the original bond.
    . There are published
references on Caroline Co. marriage bonds, but not in the local libraries. The Joseph
Lawrence Family Bible entries imply they married around 1815.

While in TN, Joannah T. Lawrence wrote a letter back to VA that survives. It
is in the Archives of the Virginia Library, as listed in its on-line card
    catalogue:

Lawrence, Joannah T. Letter, 1841 Apr 24 Manuscript Archives and
    Manuscripts

    April 24, 1841 Letter
    Located in the Virgina Library
    Accession 38447, Local
Government Records Collection: Caroline County, Virginia. It is dated
24 April 1841, from Joannah T. Lawrence (ca. 1800-1853) of Rutherford
County, Tennessee to Henry Hill of Hanover County, Virginia. She writes
concerning the death of her husband on 20 October 1840, and requests a
copy of the will of her father Matthew Peatross (d. 1805) of Caroline
County, Virginia in order to determine the disposition of his slaves.
This accession is a part of the Caroline County Circuit Court Records.

On the next Census, we see that Archibald had left Caroline and moved to
Rutherford Co., TN. Joseph remained in Caroline.

    Lawrance, Arch'd 3120001-011001

There is also the above John G. Lawrence. He appears earlier on the King
William Co., VA 1820 Census. I've no info connecting him to the other Lawrence.
JGL ran a boys academy, and there are actually a lot of references to him in
    VA documents.
Joseph moved to TN about 1835 (See birth info for his children on
the 1850 Census below.); he appears on the Rutherford Co., TN 1840 Census.
Samuel had evidently moved off from Caroline Co. by then as well - though I
    haven't tracked him.

Samuel - who is listed next to Archibald - will figure prominently below. I
believe he was the eldest son of Archibald, though this remains to be proven.

Rutherford Co. records are nearly complete, with the exception of a few deed
books that were burned in the Civil War. Fortunately, all probate records
survive, including those for Joseph (d. 20 Oct 1840), Archibald (d.ca. 1845) and
Joannah T. (d. 23 Oct 1853). Probate records on them are as follows:

I would note here that it is unusual to see widows with their own probate
records in this period. This probably means she had her own real property.
Since property was usually joint in those days, this may mean she bought property,
or inherited property after her husband's death (I have seen examples of
    both).

It appears both widows survived past the 1850 Census. Joannah T. remained in
Rutherford Co. until her death, and is listed with her youngest children
there. Evidently, Archibald's widow Fannie (Peatross) moved to Davidson Co. TN -
living in Nashville, or on its outskirts; nearby was Samuel Lawrence - as
noted above, he was probably her eldest son.

TN to Roberta S. Mason; they appear on the Graves Co., KY 1860 Census near
    Sam'l Lawrence.)

Around 1856, some of these Lawrence's began migrating up to Graves Co., KY.
There is an entry in the Graves Co. Vital Statistics Records for the death of a
daughter of a J.P and M.F. Lawrence who evidently had recently arrived from
Rutherford Co. TN. I have not determined who they were, and they do not appear
on the Graves Co. 1860 Census; they may appear on the Calloway Co., KY Census
    for that year.

Samuel M. and Lucinda Lawrence also appear in the Graves Co. Vital
Statistics, with the death of a daughter in 1858 (Nancy, age 3 on the Davidson Co., TN
1850 Census); they do appear on the Graves Co., KY 1860 Census as well:

Besides Samuel Lawrence, his probable brother Jonathon appears on the Graves
Co. 1860 Census, as does the family of James Little, whose daughter Mary Ann
is probably she who married George Hopkins Lawrence (ca. 1861 as implied by the
birth years of their children in the Graves Co. 1870 Census).

(Note: Vincy A. is evidently the second wife, the names in this group hint
JML's first wife might have been a Jackson.)

I could not find William H. Lawrence on the 1860 Census using printed
indices, or Ancestry.com searches. However, he may still be listed - a search
through microfilms of the originals may turn him up in Rutherford Co., Davidson Co.
    or Graves Co.

George H. does appear - along with Mary Ann (Little) on the Graves Co. 1870
Census, Feliciana Precinct - as do numerous other other Lawrence's. Some of
these are the same as from Davidson Co., TN.
