  • Note:
The minutes from November 1780, for the Commissioners for C onspiricies, show on November 15, "The Board having receive d information that Joseph Stalker of the East District of t he Manor of Rensselaerwyck is knowing to several Villanie s committed by persons living at New Scotland such as harbo uring spies from the Enemy etc. resolved that the said Jose ph Stalker be cited to appear before us on Friday next in O rder to his being Examined as to the above."

No record has been found of a subsequent appearance by Jose ph before the Commissioners.

Pearson shows Joseph, "Van de Presbyteriansche gemeente" (f rom the Presbyterian congregation), his two marriages, an d the births of Alexander and William.

Res. Notes: A Joseph Stalker Stalker & Anne, had childre n b. at Boston between 1639 and 1699; there were Stalker fa milies in Mendon, Worcester Co., MA., where Joseph, son o f Joseph & Mary, was b. 30 May 1724; and there were Stalker s Lynn, MA, and in Lyme, CT.

A Joseph Stalker was on the tax list in 1746 in Ridgefield , CT (for 27L); and on 4 Apr 1750, Josph Stalker, formerl y of Ridgefield, sold land in Reading, CT, that he purchase d 10 Jan 1744/5 from Nath. Hibbard and wife.

    Hudson: a Joseph of Hudson d. 19 March 1840 age 84y; an d a Henry of Hudson d. 18 December 1842 age 33y. Dutches s Co. tax lists show a Joseph Stocker in the Southern Preci nct, Feb 1758-Jun 1762; in Rombout Precinct, a Stocker on J ohn Gew's farm, 1768, a Stocker on John Wood's place, 1769- 70, a Stocker 1771 & 72, and Stephen Stolker, 1773,75, an d 77.

Traditional naming conventions would strongly suggest tha t Joseph's father should be Alexander Stalker, since he nam ed his first and a later son Alexander. The name Alexande r was also repeated by some of Joseph's children. However , I have found no Alexander Stalker/Stocker in the US - onl y in Scotland, where a Joseph Stalker, son of Alexander & M argaret Paterson, was bp. 20 Aug 1732, Stirling, Stirling , Scotland (IGI extracted record of Stirling, Scotland). T here was also a Joseph Stalker, son of John & Isabell Shioc h, b. 1 Nov 1746, Perth, Perth, Scotland (IGI extracted rec ord of Perth, Scotland). I have found no record of eithe r of these Josephs emigrating to New Scotland in Albany Co. , NY, with the other Scottish families that settled there.

It appears that some of the children of John Stalker and Ma ry Morehouse migrated to Dutchess and Columbia Counties, N Y - notably Peter in Claverack, Columbia Co. Dutchess Co . Articles of Association show that in June & July, Levi, J oseph, and Comfort Stalker were signers in Nine Partners, N ortheast Precinct. It is tempting to believe that Joseph w as the Joseph of Albany Co., particularly since his secon d wife's family came from Ducthess Co.; but this signing o f the Articles of Association, and Dutchess tax lists appea r at the same time as Joseph was involved with the Albany C o. militia, appeared before the Albany Co. Commissioners o f Conspiricies, and had his first son, Alexander, bp. at th e Albany DRC. The Joseph in Dutchess Co., NY, may have bee n b. 1730, d. 1755, who m. Grace Wildman, b. 1730, Danbury , Fairfield Co., CT (see connection with Levi Stalker, belo w).

George Morehouse, b. 14 Jun 1747, son of James of Fairfield , CT. also migrated to Nine Partners in Dutchess Co., wher e he signed the Articles of Association in 1775. He m. Sar ah Davis, Fairfield, 19 Jan 1770.

Levi Stalker was on the payroll for horse travel in Capt. D aniel Wildman's Co. of Alarm, 16 Reg., for an expedition t o Fairfield, Norwalk, etc., in Jul 1779 (see connection wit h Grace Wildman, above).

Peter Stalker, age 27, 5' 11" b. Fairfield, resided Fairfie ld, dark complection, dark eyes, dark hair, enlisted at Fai rfield, CT, Feb 1777 for the duration, in Capt. Roger's Co. , 3rd CT Regiment. Again, Sgt. Peter Stalker enlisted fo r the duration, 26 Jan 1783, 8th Co., 3rd CT Regiment. Hi s pension record shows his wife and children, date & plac e of birth and marriage, etc.
