Title: Letter from Howard Nelson to Anne Winters Oct. 30, 1984 Text: Oct. 30 1989
Dear Anne and Bob,
We received your nice letter letting us know how you are and all about your children. We are glad they are getting along so nicely. I guess you all like California? I can not lay my hands on your last letter but will try to answer your questions as I remeber them, if not ask again.
My father (Frank Nelson) married Mary Teresa Lehne after being a widower 6 years. She was a NY City lady who had retired as a dress designer and moved to Sunside in a farm home she and her father and mother had moved to in their retirement. So when she and Dad married her father and mother came to live with us. They both died after some years and are buried in Cairo. Her mother lived with two years of Mary's death. They both died in Kenosha and Buried in Cairo. Mary's father died before we moved to Kenosha. Mary was a wonderful woman and I dearly loved her. She died of cancer of the brain. There were no children or stepchildren. Mary had never been married before.
My mother was married to Bert Smith of Tampico, Ill. They had one child, Viva. They were divorced and subsequently my mother, Leona Bell Love, married my father and bore Vernon, Bernice, and me, in that order.Viva lived with us until my mother's death in Aug. 1916 and then went to her and my grandparent's Love. There she made her home. She taught school and married Wm. Hasenyager who is still living in a nursing home in Mendota, ILl. Viva and Bill lived on a farm and were prosperous., they had two children, Virginia and Rhonald. They both did well and have families.
You may wonder why I wrote that Norton Hill was in Albany County. Norton Hill now is in Greene County, about 2 or 3 miles from the Albany County line. But Greene County was not formed until 1822 so it is reasonable to believe that Norton Hill, the location of our forefathers, was in Albany County at that time.
I stayed there with my grandmother Nelson some of 1918. Uncle Charlie and Aunt Flossie lived with her too. Their home was in Albany Co. but we went to the store in Greeneville which is in Greene Co. by horse and buggy so you know it would not be far away. As I remember, 3 or 4 miles.
You asked who Howard Jennings was. He was my Aunt Minnie's husband, my father's sister, so he was not a blood kin. He was in a storm and an electrical line had blown down on the road before him. he got out of his car to pick up the wire to clear the road and was killed. Bert Snyder, Beulah's father, was behind in another car and called to him but Uncle Howard was deaf so could not be warned of the danger.
On one old note I wote tomyself there is an indication that a story about my grandfather Love or/and his mother, is in the Princeton,Ill Historical Society records. Just by coincidence, Mary Nelson, Gordon and Mary's daughter is now living in Princeton. I have been trying to get her address from Gordon and also from Beulah, so I could write to her. In fact, I don't remember her married name.
I wrote to you about the story of Grandfather Love going on a flat boat from Pennsylvania to Illinois. As I remember the that they went up the Illinois River. After looking at the map I wonder if it was not the Mississippi River. Whiteside County, the county where Tampico is located, borders on the Mississippi River. However, it is not too far from the Illinois River. I sure would like to see the record in the Princeton Historical Society file.
My heart attack was April 17, 1:30 AM, after I mailed my income tax report April 16. I am getting along fine, can do most anything I need to do except mow the lawn. I use a riding mower but can not trim the lawn like I could with a walking mower.
Your Aunt Julia is getting along fine too. She has hypertension problems and arthritis which she keeps pretty well under control. ...
Bob, your mother and dad were married in Ridgewood NY sometime in 1934 or 1935. I was living in Wisc. at the time. At your Aunt Marian's home. (my note - wedding at Marian Winters Timberman's home). Am going to put this in the mail.
Love to all of you, Uncle Howard (Nelson - in Lenoir City, Tennessee)
