    NOTES: Excerpted from: "HISTORY OF ASHLAND COUNTY, OHIO (page 212). JOHN PORTER: ......"John Porter was born in Virginia, October 15, 1799, and removed with his father's* family to Westmoreland County (Rostraver Township), Pennsylvania, in 1810. In 1824 he removed to Vermillion township, now Ashland County [ Ohio ]. He located near what is known as Smith's mill, near Beall's trail and camping ground. His brother DANIEL [ Porter ] and several acquaintances had been in Beall's expedition in 1812 [ War of 1812 ], and finally located in the same neighborhood. Mr. Porter's neighbors were John Johnston, Thomas Roe, Uriah Johnston, George Eckley, Eli Finley, George Keene, Isaac Vail, Robert Finley, Lemuel Bolter, and John Farmer, and shortly afterwards Isaac Paulin. ......Mr. John Porter improved his farm and resided on it until January 20, 1860, when he deceased. His widow still survives. His sons are David, deceased; William O., and Daniel. ......William O. Porter has filled a number of township offices, and been sheriff four years. He possesses a good education, and has recently studied law, and been admitted. He was engaged in the manufacture of woolen goods while there. In 1834 he [ Daniel Porter ] removed with his family to Decatur, Illinois, and engaged in mercantile business. This Daniel Porter was a soldier of 1812, who was honorably discharged on account of illness, and resided here until his death, in his forth-fifth year...." -- snip snip -- Daniel Porter's date and location of death are uncertain. Died: before 1850 (Daniel is not on the 1850 census); location: probably Stark County, Illinois. Daniel Porter married Catherine GAFFNEY. "History and Biography of Stark County, Illinois", by M. A. Leeson, page 115 (this is a listing of old settlers and their deaths), Catherine Porter died in West Jersey township, May 26, 1883, aged 96; resident of state and county 49 years."
