Buried Bethany Pioneer Cemetery, Silverton, Marion Co, OR
Bethany Cemetery, established 1850, is located in Marion Co., 2 miles west of Silverton, Oregon. It's bordered on the north side by Hazelgreen Road, on the south by Brush Creek Road, on the east by tall firs and by pasture on the south. Bethany is a small community consisting of, besides the cemetery, a school and small grocery/antique store. A church was organized in 1851, and eventually built near the cemetery but is no longer there. It probably moved into Silverton.

According to an essay written on Edward S Porter, handed down to me by my grandmother Sybil Luella (Campbell) Porter:
"1835 Edward moved his family from Ohio ro Illinois and settled in Fulton Co. where he engaged in farming for a score of years. The family headed west in 1853 and went directly to Marion Co, OR settling about 5 miles southwest of Silverton on what is known as the Porter donation claim. After the death of his wife, Anna, he lived with his youngest son, presumably Oliver) living to be over 70 years of age."
Sons & Daughters of Oregon Pioneers:
Donation Land Claim #3146, arrived in Oregon Territory 9-27-1853, filed for settlement claim 1-25-1855
