    Notes on William Armstrong, Jr. by Donald Hayworth;

    William Armstrong Jr. was born in that part of the Old Ninety-Six District in South Carolina that in later years fell first into Washington District then into Pendleton District. Still later this area became part of Anderson District and finally, after William and his family moved away, Anderson County.
    The pre-1850 census records only name the head of household and there were many William Armstrongs in South Carolina when our two Williams lived there. This makes it very difficult to establish family relationships or even to know that a particular record applies to the desired William Armstrong. The relationship of the two early William Armstrongs in our line is established by a deed from Pendleton District, South Carolina, dated August 1814. This deed indicates that William Armstrong Sr. sold a tract of land on Generostee Creek to his son William Armstrong Jr. Another deed, dated August 1828, indicates that William Armstrong Jr. sold this same tract to Silas Massey 14 years later.
    While William was born in the area now known as Anderson County, South Carolina, and owned property there from 1814 to 1828 it is not certain that he lived there following his marriage. The uncertainty arises from the fact that the International Genealogical Index birth records show that most of his children were born in Edgefield District, South Carolina, some distance south of present day Anderson County. Perhaps, he first lived in Edgefield District and moved back to the Anderson County area in 1814 when he purchased land there from his father. In any event, he moved his family into Georgia in 1828 after selling the land he had purchased from his father. His oldest daughter, Jane, was married in Gwinnett County, Georgia, about 1830 and his two youngest daughters were born there in 1829 and about 1830.
    The "History of Gwinnett County, Georgia" contains several entries about our William Armstrong. It shows that William Armstrong, along with others, pledged to pay for a teacher for 12 months from the date of 19 July 1830. It also shows that William owned five slaves in 1830 and that he drew lot number 463 in the 1832 Cherokee land lottery.
    William and his family remained in Georgia for about six years before deciding to move on. In 1832 Randolph County, Alabama, was created from land ceded by the Creek Indians. Two years later, in 1834, William decided to move to the newly opened territory in Alabama. The part of Randolph County that William settled in was just south of the town of Arbacoochee on the banks of the Tallapoosa River. This land now lies in Cleburne County, Alabama, which was formed from part of Randolph County in 1866. William lived in Randolph County, Alabama, the remainder of his life and died there in 1856.
    William's obituary printed in the "American Eagle" on 12 June 1856 read as follows: "William Armstrong, 70 years, died at his residence in Randolph County on the 3rd inst. He was a native of South Carolina and emigrated and settled where he died while he was still young. He was a kind husband and parent and an indulgent master."
    Not long after his death, the Civil War would break out and forever alter the Old South that he cherished. William's father and grandfather both fought in the Revolutionary War to help establish America as an independent Nation. His sons and grandsons would soon fight in the Civil War that almost destroyed the Nation his ancestors helped establish.
