Note: (Westfall,Westvall,Westvael). Juriaen arrived in New Amsterdam on 11(or 4)August 1642 aboard the ship "Den Houttyn",Capt. Adriaen Dircksen,Cdr. The ship left Texel,Holland 6 June 1642. He was a farmer and stockraiser. Juriaen had one of the best farms on Papscanee(Papsichine)Island. His surname is often spelled "Bestvall" in records. He signed documents with a three-pronged trident mark. He was originally a farmhand,brought over as an indentured servant by Kiliaen van Rensselaer(a wealthy diamond and pearl merchant of Holland who owned large landholdings in New Netherland) and served in the home of Michael Jansen. Juriaen was killed by Esopus Indians while guiding a troop of British soldiers against the Indians. Juriaen is said to have actually been Juergen Westphal,bapt.12 Mar.1621 at Stettin,Pommerania (now Poland),son of Joachim Westphal and Elizabeth Utecht of Poelitz, nr.Stettin. Still others believe that Eliz.Utech/t was wife of Nicholas Juria(e)n Westfall. Research by Doug Westfall in Luyderdorp,however,shows that this immigrant to New Netherland born 1629 was son of Nicholas Jurian van Westphalen,who was son of Jurian Westphalen. This Juriaen and wife are ancestors of Gen. William Stark Rosecrans (1819-1898) and his brother Sylvester Horton Rosecrans; Hudson van Etten (1871-1941),recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor; Gloria Laura Vanderbilt; Lawrence Schoonover; Edward D. Wood Jr.; Cissy Patterson; Robert Ludlum; Frank Earle Schoonover; Vance Brand; Cornelia Adele Strong; Joseph Milton Long (1912-96); Deanna (Dee) B. Wallace-Stone; Richard Samuel Westfall (1924-96); Augustus Schoonmaker. Possible descendants: Joseph Westfall Thompson (1869-1941); Capt. Hugh Merle Elmendorf (1895-1933).
