Tillman was a Sergeant with Company B,28th Regiment North Carolina Troops,"The Gaston Invincibles",Army of Northern Virginia.He enlisted 30 July 1861 as a Private.Promoted to Corporal 27 Feb.1862.Present until wounded in the arm at Cedar Mountain,Va. 9 August 1862. Returned to duty Nov.1862-Feb.1863. Wounded at Chancellorsville,Va. May 1-3 1863. Returned to duty bef.July 1-5,1863 when wounded and captured at Gettysburg,Pa. Confined at David's Island,N.Y.Harbor July 17-24,1863. Paroled and transferred to City Point,Va. where received 16 Sept.1863 for exchange. Returned to duty at unspecified date;promoted to Sergeant Sept.1863-Oct.1864. Surrendered at Appomattox,Va. 9 Apr.1865.At surrender,his commanding officer was Capt.T.J.Lineberger.Tillman served on the board of county commissioners and was a J.O.P.of North Brook for 40 years. Tilman has been mistakenly called "Hillery" Foster in the book "Our Kin" by L.M. Hoffman.
