Born in Wethersfield, Conn., March 18, 1757. The tradition inthe family is that, at the outbreak of the Revolution, he triedto enlist, but was rejected at first on account of his boyishappearance, but he succeeded later, and served in the company ofCapt. Jonathan Hale, of Glastonbury, and was stationed at BostonJanuary to March, 1776. He reenlisted in the Company of CaptainWelles, and served in New York. His regiment was at the battlesof Long Island and White Plains. He evidently acquired a faireducation, and perhaps became a teacher in the succeeding years. After his first marriage he settled for a time in Glastonbury, where his first child was born. About 1790 he removed toHubbardton and occupied the farm which his father had taken upin 1775, but had abandoned when Vermont became involved in theborder warfare. He lived for some years in the old log-housebuilt by his father. On this homestead his seven children by thefirst wife were born, and here she died, leaving him with afamily of seven children. Mr. Churchill then fitted himself forthe ministry. It is said that he studied at Andover TheologicalScholl, and by his church Covenant, dated at Andover, June 2,1784, now in the possesion of a grandson, J. W. Hull, ofPittsfield, it seems that he was then a student. He probablytook a special course. His son Norman writes us, in 1885; "Afterthe death of my mother and father took an abbreviated course intheology, was ordained in 1807, and began to preach as aCongregational minister." He removed to Litchfield, N. Y., thesame year. He was settled awhile at New Lebanon, N. Y. He waschaplain of the Twenty-seventh Regiment, New York militia, from1810 to 1822, and served in the war of 1812, under ColonelBelinger, in the Black River campain, his son Norman going withhim as his waiter. His last pastorate was at Winfield, N. Y. Hedied at Morrisville, N. Y., Sept. 29, 1828, and was buried atWinfield. He married 1st, in Wethersfield, Nov 2, 1786, HannahBoardman, daughter of Charles and Abigail (Stillman) Boardman. She died at Hubbardton, Dec 10, 1804. Married 2d, Aug 28, 1807,Olive Tilden, daughter of John, and sister of Elam Tilden, thefather of Samuel J. Tilden, the Democratic presidentialcandidate of 1876. Married 3d, March 23, 1823, Mrs. AnnaEggleston, in Batavia, N. Y. She was a widow with a family ofchildren, one of whom Norman Churchill married.
