    !BIOGRAPHY: Esther is said to have been of Welsh descent. She was named with siblings in her father Richard's Will in 1777 as being under age 21. Family tradition is that she was the second wife of James McGOUGH and was disowned by her Presbyterian family when she married Catholic. (Unproven)

The court awarded an inquest to the Sheriff not less that 15 days notice of the day of holding to be given by the Sheriff to the widow and guardians of the children under the age of 14. 1814 Mar: Accounts of the administrator of the Estate of James McGOUGH, deceased presented to the Court and approved. 08 Mar 1814: On petition, the Court appointed Isaac CRUM of Cambria Co to be guardian for the children of James McGOUGH, deceased, who are under age 14. Page 3 1/2 The Petition of Rachel and Julian McGOUGH, minor daughters, above the age of 14, of James McGOUGH, deceased, praying for liberty to chose a guardian was read and Pettitioners, by their attorney James McRIDDLE, chose their mother, Elizabeth McGOUGH. Court approved. (Esther instead of Elizabeth) Mar 1814: Petition of Elizabeth McGOUGH to have a guardian. Makes choice of Godfrey KNEPPER to be guardian over her person and Estate till she be of full age or is approved accordingly. Dec. 1814: Petition of "Hester" McGOUGH, widow & Executrix of James McGOUGH, deceased, to have Luke McGUIRE, Esq appointed guardian over persons & Estates of the children of the deceased that are under the age of 14 years--in the rooms of Isaac CRUM. Court appoints him. Pg. 6. O5 Sept 1815: The parties in the estate of James McGOUGH, deceased, appearing in the Court and being called refrused to take the land in the inquisition named at the appraisement on motion of the Court, that the land in said writ be exposed to public sale of the premises the first Monday of Nov. next, legal notice of the same being first given.

    {The spelling in the following will is same as in document} WILL: Cambria County, PA VOL 1; Pg 202 Dated 04 May 1843 Probate 4 July 1843 I, Esther McGOUGH of Somerhill Township Cambria County and State of Pennsylvania, do make this my last will as follows. First I do wish all my damends collected 2nd I do wish all my feunerl expenses to be paid & the Clergy also to be paid & all just claimes aganste me & my estete 3rd And further after all expenses & just clames are paid then my daughter Sarah & hir children are to have all that is left 4th And that I do hereby constitute & appoint Samuel Croyl of the Township County & state afore said to be the Executor of this my last will & testament revoking and annulling all former wills by me hereto fore made saitifying & confirming this In testamoney whereof I have here unto set my hand & seal this fourth day of May in the year of our Lord 1843 (Her Mark) Signed sealed & delivered by Esther McGOUGH the above named testatrix as & for hir last will & testament in the presents of us who at hir request & in hir presents have subscribed our names as witnesses thereto.     CAMBRIA Co: This fourth day of July AD 1843 before me John M. DORLAND Deputy Register for the Probate of Wills and granting letters of Administration in and for the County of Cambria, personally came Stephen KERNS and John KERNS the subscribing witnesses to the above will and being duly sworn according to law did depose and say that they were present and saw and heard Esther McGOUGH the testatrix sign, seal publish pronounce and declare the foregoing instrument of writing as and for her testament and last Will and at the time of so doing she was of perfect and sound mind memory and understanding to the best of their knowledge and belief.
