Note: Cause of Death: Plumbob fell on him William immigrated to South Australia in 1876. From South Australian Shipping Records: J. Williams, 38, Lab., Mary 29, A lice 7, Clara J. 5, Wm. J. 4, Agnes L. 2, Chas. H. 1 sailed from Plymou th in July 1876 on the "Bencleuch" for Port Adelaide. Wm Francis Fookes Bo ase was the surgeon superintendent on board. William John [Ripper] Williams was killed in Broken Hill in 1893, and he w as 44 years old. The records there are clear because a plumbob was dropp ed on him - he used to inspect the shorings in the mines for safety. His d eath caused some consternation because the people, who dropped it on hi m, obviously were not practicing safe procedures.Unfortunately as the cur ator for the Mining Accidents Memorial List said, itwas in the 'pre-compe nsation period'.
