Joel Hager's Research February 2004 - Research Notes to users of gencircles

My attempts to update my other file have resulted in less and less individuals showing up in the online file. So I have uploaded the file separately. Sorry for any messages that have been posted to the other file that are no longer viewable. I have tried to keep up with updating the database as messages are posted so I have captured some of the information posted. This GEDCOM file has over 240,000 related individuals. Some individuals may be listed as living due to privatization of the file to protect information on the living. I will continue to make changes as folks provide information, which validates a different family connection. I make corrections and update regularly. I am not perfect and I do make mistakes. I compile data that may not be validated or researched by me. Sorry! I will get it right if given the opportunity. I will respond to e-mails if they are within my research. I may not respond to your dead ends or it sounds like it may be my ancestor. I share freely and I am not interested in publishing a book at the moment, since I believe information can be shared electronically without publishing. Who knows that could change? I would have to improve on my documentation skills though. My research has been totally by the Internet, e-mail and of course family sources and many books and publications. Sharing information has tended to generate sharing in return.

My research includes mostly the following: Paternal:

HAGER, COOK, BIAS, PERRY, TONEY, MANGUS, ADKINS, BUCHANAN, NELSON, TURNER'S of Amherst County, VA, EVANS, WALKER, BROWNING, STEWART/STUART, FURGESON, CRABTREE, CLAY, MCCLUNG, BELCHER, LAFFERTY, and SHANNON.

    The primary counties are

Boone, Lincoln, Cabell, Logan, Wyoming, Raleigh, Mercer, Wayne, Mingo, Monroe, Fayette, Kanawha, and Putnam Counties of West Virginia

as well as Giles, Tazewell, Franklin and Amherst Counties, Virginia.

I have run into dead ends with William Walker (1797-1883) m. Nancy Browning; William Browning (1775-1850) m. Catherine Anglin; Isabel Shirkey Nelson (1785-1869) m. Joseph B. F. Perry (1783-1869); Nancy Crabtree (1795-1860s) m. Alexander Buchanan (1797-1860l of Oxford and may have been related but not confirmed to date; and of course Phillip Hager. Sr. (1735-1807) of Tazewell County, Virginia.

    Maternal:

SUTORIS/SUTORYSZ, FARKAS, ZLATTOSZ, and YOUNG from Hungary to Chicago then to Cleveland and Milwaukee.

Other surnames within the research are

Miller, Workman, Barker, Epling, Spurlock, Lovejoy, Stollings, Elkins, Vance, Cooper, Yeager, Vannatter, Harless, Canterbury, Brown, Bailey, Toler, Hatfield, McCoy, Fowler, Lowe, Childers, Copley, Marcum, Hill, Dingess, Farley, Thompson, Hinchman, Ellis, Dempsey, Pridemore, Ballard, Ferrell, Pauley, Lewis, Allen, Bragg, Acord, Williams, Dalton, Noel, Wolf, Blankenship, Webb, Smith and many others from the Southwestern part of what used to be Virginia and now is Southern West Virginia.

I want to thank Joanne Bias Samuels (Bias); Kathy Mazor (Bailey, Brown, Cook, Vance); Sylvia Acord Bragg (Acord, Stewart, Lafferty, Allen, Elkins); Myra E. Freeman (Miller, Cabell, Pauley); Marie Shinskie Hudnall (Garretson/Garrison, Blankenship); JJ Adkins (Adkins, Hager, Yeager); Alfred Toney (Toney); Elizabeth Morgan (Morgan, Cook); Kathy Lynn VanNote (Harless); Vanessa Allen (Elkins); Lisa Honaker-Odom (Adkins, Cook and many others) there are so many many others that have been sharing information with me as well. A special thanks to Janet Barker Hager and the many volunteers that have submitted articles and changes to the Boone County Genealogical Societies publications Kith and Kin and their Newsletter and for all their hard work and willingness to share their time and research with us all. Another special thanks to James Burgess and his extensive research on the Brownings, Burgess, Anglin, Mullins and Vance families that he is so willing to share in the efforts to further the research on these families. You can visit Jim Burgess's website at http://www.surnames.com/burgess/. I have used many sources that I tried to give credit to, so if I used your stuff and you want credit let me know. It is impossible for me to have researched all these families personally nor can I take credit for doing so. Keep sending me your info and posting comments here. I will make sure it gets into the database. I have been updating about once a month or so. That frequency will depend on how much additional info I have added. Please be advised that as with any genealogical data it may have some errors in it, so please bring those to my attention as you find them. I want to get it right here. Janet Barker has questioned my use of copyrighted materials from Kith and Kin and other sources in my database without asking permission and then making changes or additions to that data without properly documenting its source and using the proper format for indicating my change or addition. I am sorry I have not done a better job of this documentation and permission trail, but I am doing better now. So be advised that I cannot give anyone permission to use the materials posted here that came from other sources. I do not know what else to say. I have discovered that facts can not be copyrighted and that only the unique presentation of such data can be copyrighted. I maintain a MyFamily.com website with much more information, photos, reports and other documents on the above mentioned families, if you want an invitation send me an e-mail so I can give you permission to get in. I can take anything you choose to give and make The Work Happen! This is a working/research database and may contain errors. Please evaluate the information and sources carefully as much of it is secondary. You will want to consider it a starting point, and confirm the data with additional research. Corrections/additions are welcome and are earnestly solicited. 'Abt' dates and 'in/of' places are best-guess estimates for reference purposes. This information is a joint effort, and the information contained herein is the property of those who have contributed it. This data is to be used for private research only. Copyright restrictions may apply.

    Yours in research,
