The surname Keenan is of Irish origin.
Cecilia Rafferty Clapsaddle told me this in a letter she sent me in May 2001......"Owen Keenan came from Ireland. He was living with his grandparents. Granma and Grandad Keenan. {I think Grandad Keenan was actually Owen's brother Terrance Keenan} When he died he was buried in St. Bonaventure cemetery. Owen and Mary Freeze were married where the cemetary is now. The church was right where the big cross is standing. When Owen died my mom {Mary E. Keenan Rafferty}was 5yrs and Aunt Agnes was 1 1/2 yrs and their brother Johnny was shot by his Uncle cleaning his gun he didn't know it had a shell in it. Mom's Mother {Mary Freeze Keenan}left after the funeral with Aunt Kate and she left the kids with the grandparents. She never came back. She got married and lived in Wisconsin. My mom and Aunt Agnes neverknew their mom & dad. They were raised in Irishtown by Grampa Owen and Mary Freeze {she must have been confused when she wrote this}......Aunt Emma Keenan married Harry Kephart. They had a son he was adopted, they are all dead now. My Aunt Agnes married Patrick Johnson. They had one sstill born named Mary. Then Frances, Cyril, Josephine, Agnes & Regis. Their oldest died from Typhoid Fever when she was 3yrs and their last son Regis had water tumor on the brain. He died when he was 7yrs old. All that developed of him washis head. It was huge. He had a mind of a 30 year old. He knew all his prayers, all his ABC's, he could read anything you gave him and he could spell any word you gave him. The night he died he sang Suwanee River. These people are all buried in our cemetery but moms mother."
