Nancy Keeney, second child of Michael and Catherine Lewis Keeney, was bo
rn in 1783 in Greenbrier Co and died in 1783 at Kanawha Falls, WV. She fe
ll in love with Capt. Henry Montgomery when she was just 17 and he about 3
5.
He was born in Ireland in 1765. son of James, killed in 1775 in a coloni
al attempt to take Quebec, and Huldah Montgomery. Nancy and Henry return
ed to Greenbrier Co, where she deeded her share of her father's esta
te to an uncle, George Lewis. For a time they lived in Teays Vall
ey at at Hurricane Creek, but sold their land and moved to Kanawha Falls w
here they occupied large cabin and had 75 acres of land, which they purcha
sed from John Huddleston.
This tract became known as Moutgomery's Ferry. In 1820 Henry was grant
ed a patent from Governor Thomas Randolph of Virginia to 50 acres on bo
th sides of the river, giving him complete control of the ferry, which sta
yed in operation for 100 years. Their home was a stop over for way farer
s. They were buried in an old, now abandoned cemetery at Kanawha Falls, b
ut in recent years their graves have been designated by a granite slab bea
ring a bronze plate with the inscription, "Pioneer Ancestors of the Montgo
mery Family in the Upper Kanawha Valley. Henry died in 1852.
