Note: birthdate also found on ancestry.com as February 16, 1825 Some records indicate this William Russell was the son of John Russell Jr. and Dolly Burleson. 1830 Franklin County, TN census lists two William Russells A William Russell is on Indian Creek waters of the Barren River on the 1799-1800-1801 tax Roll in Barren County Kentucky. Major William Was also recorded on a road Jury, and Mary "Polly, and Dicey Russell, were married in Barren County, There was also a George and John Russell near by living in Barren County Kentucky. [note Absolom Wagner born about 1803 in Barren county Kentucky that married Susan Russell] [ Susan was probley born in Franklin County Tennessee about 1813] This Indian Creek Deed can be traced to Warren County in about 1792 and to Jefferson County Kentucky in January 6 1785, just a few months after William and Agness sold the Boons creek tract in the early winter of 1784." EHT-This Indian Creek William cannot be William husband of Agnes Smith who was in Grainger County, TN by 1786 and Dickson County, TN by 1792. Goodspeed's History of Tennessee, p. 786: The first settlers of Franklin County, Tn. in about 1800 were Major William Russell, who settled on Boiling Fork, near Cowan, and Jesse Bean, who settled on Bean Creek. Scarborough, Southern Kith & Kin, 1951: In 1808 William and Absalom Russell received land grants on the Boiling Fork of Elk River, Franklin county, Tn. Tn. Land Grants 1808-1822 pg 15: Tn. Grant # 256, 200 acs. to Wm. Russell, 2nd District, White County, bounded by Absalom Russell, 25 June, 1808. Franklin Co. Tn. Deed Book ABCGH, grant 256: William Russell, assignee of the heirs of Wm. Dixon, filed an occupant claim 15 June 1808, for 200 acres, White County, second district, 9th range, 2nd section, on the Boiling Fork of the Elk River, beginning at a sassafras on Absalom Russell's north boundary. (ET White County was created in 1806 and included what would become Franklin County in 1807) MacKellar, Chuwalee, Chronicles of Franklin County, page 42: In 1808 the first Franklin County elections were held. The act incorporating the county prescribed that Court was to be held in Major Russell's home on Boiling Fork, near where Cowan now is, and the Court continued to meet there until 1814. In addition to making Major Russell's house the Court House, the Legislature provided that the musters should be held on his premises. Absalom Russell was the first county clerk. By deed dated 6 Mar. 1810, Wm. Russell of Franklin County, Tn. deeded to Hugh Montgomery of Franklin County, for $800, tract on waters of Boiling Gork of Elk River, beginning at a sassafras at southeast corner of said Russell's 200 acre tract and on Absalom Russell's north boundary line, being 160 acres. Proved by oath of William Russell, before Absalom Russell, Clerk. (Franklin county deeds, page A-63) By deed dated Sept. 13, 1811, William Russell conveyed to Absalom Russell a negro "Jerry," age about 22. Proved by oath of William Russell before Absalom Russell, clerk, Oct. 1811 (Deeds, Franklin Co. Tn. 306) Deed Book B., page 147, Wm. Russell to Temple Sargent negro woman and child.
