LOUIS II, son of LOTHAIR I and ERMENGARDE DE ALSACE was emperor of the West (855-875) and king of Italy (844-875) was the son of Emperor Lothair I. His title as emperor had little meaning since he
ruled
only in Italy, and even there his reign was constantly challenged by independent Lombard dukes and by Arab invaders of S. Italy. He supported his brother Lothair, king of Lotharingia, in a dispute
with the pope and briefly occupied Rome (864), but he
subsequently submitted to the pope. He unsuccessfully tried to claim Lotharingia after Lothair's death - Encyclopedia, p. 491
