According to Paula Milligan, the George Washington Gunter family came from Halifax Co, Va, to Patrick County,VA, in the 1820's continuing a migration that had been going on for five or six decades. Many of their neighbors in Patrick Co,and nearby Stokes Co,NC, were also from Halifax Co Va. This family of George Washington Gunter and wife Elizabeth Shelton settled in that part of Patrick Co, Va, now called five forks,just north of the Stokes Co, North Carolina, line.

While many of their children were born in Stokes, NC, several of them cross back over into Virginia with their families to settle there.
