William arrived with brother George, on the "Moffat 2" from England on 30 August 1836. Both had stolen fowls and were transported for seven years. First Offence. William was 22 and George 21. The fowls were stolen from Broad Hilton.
Trial transcript Draft:-
John Herbert of Swindon was the county Gamekeeper and Game keeper to Ambrove Goddard Esquire of Swindon. The deed took place on 3rd December 1835. They were found on the public Turnpike Rd near the toll gate at Swindon. Mr Herbert went to the house of William Garlick (must have been in the area), John Brown was Bailiff with John Tuckwell of Broad Hinton - the fowls belonged to John Tuckwell. George and William are listed on the calendar of the prisoners in the County Gaol of Fisherton Anger, Devises Old and New Prisons and Marlborough Bridewell for trail at the Devises Sessions January 5 1836. They were to be transported for seven years and in the mean time to be confined in the gaol. (We presume this means they were kept in the County Gaol of Fisherton Anger).
