The Centennial History of Nebraska Wesleyan University was published in 1988
and it contains a reprint of an article written by Ruth Bryson Bassett in 1958
recounting a train trip from her hometown of Adams to Lincoln and Wesleyan in
1890.
After discussing the details of the trip (she was 7 years old at the time), she
states: We sat down on the steps and my father told me he had put a little
money into the school. I think it was either twenty-five of maybe fifty
dollars, and I
know that either amount represented a real sacrifice to a farm family in 1890.
He said to me, "It isn't much, but I wanted to give it. I shall never get the
benefit of this school. Maybe your children, Ruth, will come here. Then he
rose
from the steps. . .He removed his hat and offered a prayer for the Nebraska
Wesleyan University. . .Fift en of my father's grandchildren have attended
Wesleyan, four of whom were my own children, and it is a matter of deep
gratification to me
that my son, Cecil Bassett, is at this time a member of the Board of Trustees
of Nebraska Wesleyan, and, may I add, that my oldest grandchild [Cecil, Jr.] is
a member of the class of 1958. [Note: her great grandchild, Cecil III, later
attended and graduated in 1984.]
Rolla and Ruth were married more than 66 years.
Charter member of Bayard Order of Eastern Star.
Named Scotts Bluff County Mother of the Year in 1960.
In 1939 she wrote her son Cecil that "Will Coleman traced us to the Mayflower
Circle and the Tudor Kings. I can't do it at all, but he has all the dope."
