  • ID: I86894138
  • Name: John (Captain or Major) COLLIER
  • Given Name: John (Captain or Major)
  • Surname: Collier
  • Sex: M
  • Birth: 1742-43 in Hanover Co. or King & Queen Co.,VA
  • Death: Jan 26, 1820 (or 1818-1819) in Nicholas Co., KY
  • Note:
    It is this John Collier, b. 1742-43 in VA (in either Hanover Co. or King and Queen Co.), that eventually emigrated to KY. There is a possibility that John Collier (b.1742-43 in VA) had at least two marriages: #1 to Hannah Hamlett (who was b. abt. 1747 in VA) in 1767 in Prince Edward Co., VA; and
    #2 to Mildred Sarah Cary/Carey/Vaughn(b. 1742-1758 in KY, daughter of William Vaughn b. abt. 1715 and d. 1794 in NC and Sarah Parson b. abt. 1715) after 1782 in KY. Some records indicate that Mildred Vaughn died in Madison Co., KY. Mildred Cary/Vaughn and John Collier had 4 children accdg.to one record:
    (1)John Collier, b. 1770 KY,
    (2)James (or Michael?) b. 1768 KY,
    (3)Martha "Patsy" b. 1780 KY,
    and (4) Lucy b. 1788 in KY.
    Other records indicate that John Collier b. abt. 1742-43 in VA and d. 1821 in KY , and son of John Collier and Elizabeth Meredith, married Mildred Sarah Vaughn (prob.Mildred Cary Vaughn-and surname Vaughn could be from a first marriage?) in 1767 in NC(?-prob. inaccurate date and place for this marriage), where John was listed as Major John Collier b. abt. 1742 in Hanover Co., VA and d. 1818-1819 in Nicholas Co., KY. This record indicates he had had 5 children with Mildred Vaughn:
    (1)James b. 1768 in KY;
    (2)John b. 1770 in KY;
    (3)Elizabeth b. 1772 in KY;
    (4)Lucy b. 1777 in KY;
    and (5) Martha Patsy b. 1782 in KY.
    Based on continuuing research into many records and databases, I have come to the conclusion that John Collier who married Mildred Vaughn is a cousin, and that this John Collier, b. 1742-43 in VA, had probably only one marriage--to Hannah Hamlett.
    Other records indicate that John Collier may have had a second marriage, to Grizzelda Taylor. (Source: History of Burtons/Colliers of Pulaski Co., KY): indicates that the book by A.E. Hart "Richard Calloway Family", in speaking of John Collier b. 1742, who was married to Girzzelda Taylor, said taht John of 1742's father was a John Collier, a prosperous planter. That would have been John Collier of 1707. It says that John Collier of 1707 had many sons and daughters, one of which was a William (this would be William Collier b. 1754) who moved to TN and was lost to all knowledge of the kindred. This is the only indication of who was William Collier b. 1754's father. However it is born out by several indicators; first the question of why would John of 1707's will not include this child, William, if he was in fact a child. The reason was that John of 1707's will was drawn in 1746, before William of 1754 was born, as was the case of another documented child of John Collier b. 1707--Mary Collier, who the VA cousins book says was b. in 1756. Note that this John Collier of 1707 d. in 1759. If, in fact, William Colyar's father was John Collier of 1707, it makes sense that William may have left and gone to TN, losing all contact with his VA Collier relatives, for he would have been but 5 years old when his father died, and but 10 when his mother died.
    At least 12 children of John Collier b. 1742-43 in VA with Hannah Hamlett in VA:
    (1) Sarah Gaines (Sallie) Collier b. 1764 in VA-d. 1806 VA;
    (2) William Tompkins Collier b. abt. 1768 in VA;
    (3) Hamlett Collier b. abt. 1773 in VA;
    (4) Martha Patsy Collier b. abt. 1775 in VA; (may be an error as this is prob. dau. of Mildred Vaughn and cousin, John Collier, and born in KY)
    (5) Polly Collier b. abt. 1777 in VA;
    (6) Cynthia Collier b. abt. 1779 in VA;
    (7) Claibourne Collier b. abt. 1780 in VA;
    (8) Coleman A. Collier (farmer later) b. abt. 1783 in VA;
    (9) Obedience Collier b. abt. 1787 in VA;
    (10) Permelia A. Collier (also called Pamela)b. Sept. 11, 1793 in VA; (11)Franklin Collier b. 1773 in VA;
    and (12) John Collier b. 1783 in VA or Nicholas, KY(a son also named John Collier was prob. born to Mildred Vaughn and cousin, John Collier, in KY in 1770's).
    John Collier and Hannah Hamlett were legally married on Sept. 30, 1765 in Prince Edwards, VA, and Hannah died on Feb. 11, 182
