Azariah Canfield was a Revolutionary War soldier who served in Capt. Baldwin's Co. of the 2nd regiment of the Continental Line. Also, under Col. H. Swift he camped in Peeksill, NY under the command of General George Washington. (Ref. D.A.R. Lineage Vol. 147).
Azariah Canfield was b. 1694 and m. in 1719 to Mercy Bassett (dau. of Thomas Bassett and Sarah Baldwin - any relation to Capt. Baldwin?). Together they had 4 children.
Azariah and Mercy Canfield settled in New Milford, CT. abt. 1728 and was one of the committee who built the first bridge over the Great River in 1737. Azariah's will of Nov. 26, 1766 gave the usual dower to his wife, Mercy, lands to his son, Azariah, jr. referring to his birthright, and to his daughter, Freelove Lacey, six acres to his granddaughter Olive Lacey, lands to his two sons, Oliver & Israel, the latter to have his dwelling house and half the barn. (Source: Ackley-Bosworth genealogy).
NOTE: History of New Milford, CT. by Samuel Orcutt, inadvertently and incorrectly names "Mary Baldwin" as Azariah's wife, but there is no doubt that she was Mercy Basset, daughter of Thomas Basset. Her mother may have had the maiden name of Baldwin, as stated by the manuscripts of Nathan G. Pond and printed in the 3rd report of the Bassett family assn.
