  • Note:
I have not found any documented proof of the name of the first wife of Adam Shatto. Some say Mary Ohl was the first wife, and some say Mary Polly Barnhisle, b. 1778 Albany Pennsylvania, daughter of John Martin Bernhisel and Anna Christina Chateau. More than likely the later is the correct name. Some are saying that Adam's two wives and Mary Lawrence are buried in the cemetery. There are only TWO female Shatto's buried in the cemetery, indicating only two wives.

    **Estate Papers**
Adam Shatto died in 1846, his estate, on file in the Wayne Co., Ohio Courthouse in Wooster, was filed on January 27, 1847, as he died intestate. There are close to 60 pages of documents in the estate papers, many are receipts from the administrator. Jacob Everhard was named Administrator for the estate of Adam Shatto.

The debts of Adam Shatto appeared to have been paid by Jacob M Crouse, on behalf of the Adam Shatto estate. Full accounting shows what was paid to who, for a total of $1,344.95. A Credit of $357.00 was given, for a total owing to Jacob M Crouse, in the amount of $988.07, as a claim against the estate.

The heirs to the Adam Shatto estate were the children of the deceased: John Shatto, Joseph Shatto, Mary Ann Springer, Mary (Polly) Montgomery, Susan Doyle, Lydia Crouse and the minor children of David Shatto, deceased, Caroline and John Shatto. The heirs of the estate received shares in two separate payments. Each first received $114.28, the a second payment of $69.31, for a total of $183.59, with the minor children of David Shatto, receiving first $114.28, then the second payment of $183.59, for a total of $297.87, to be divided between the two minor children, however, the receipt of May 31, 1852 indicates total received of $183.59.
