Census: 1860 Shows John C, age 39, a Farmer, farm was valued at $500, wife Emily, age 24, children Rebecca J, age 4, Robert D, age 2, Joseph W, age 8 months, living in Smith Township, Dade Co., Missouri. 12 doors away are Emily's sister, Nancy & Newton Putnam & Family.
Note: The following information was told to my grandmother, Tenny Chaney, by her father Robert Boyd Chaney:
John C Chaney was born in Louisiana. At some point he moved to Missouri and married Emily K Stockton. John's son Robert can remember as a young boy, his father and uncle hiding out in their corn field, some one was after them, because they were southerners. He remembers his mother sneaking food to them at night. This went on for 4 or 5 nights. The last night, his mother went out with food, and they were gone. No bodies were ever found.
Note: Death Certificate for Robert Boyd Chaney reflects his father's name as "Jack" Chaney. Jack may have been a nick name for him.
