War of 1812 -- John Crouse, son of Jacob Crouse. Private in Captain Matthew Rodger's Company, Colonel Rees Hill's Regiment, Pennsylvania Militia, Miffilin County. His services commenced April 10, 1813 and ended November 5, 1813. His place of residence was Mifflin County. He was private number 56 in the quota of the 52 Regiment, 1st Brigade, 11th Division. He was Post Master on the March to Erie. Received one musket and bayonet. Record from War Department, Washington D.C. and 6th Series, Pennsylvania Archives, Volume 9, page 639.

John married Ruth Woodward about 1814 or 1815. They purchased a tract of land from William Bell, May 29, 1816, consisting of part of a section originally granted in 1767 but which passed by conveyances until bought by him. There was 96 acres and 29 perches in the parcel. Records show on February 27, 1830 John Crouse and his wife Ruth, of Milford Township, Mifflin County, sold the farm to Thomas McCommon. At this time Juniata was still part of Mifflin County, Juniata having been erected a separate county, March 2, 1831. The date of recording of deed however was October 25, 1833 when the land sold had been incorporated into Juniata County. The farm sold consisted of land in Turbett Township, once a part of Milford Township and 8 acres in Milford. The selling price was $350. Following the sale of the farm, John Crouse moved with his family to Palmyria, Portage County, Ohio, the same year. The family lived here and at Lordstown, Trumbull County, Ohio, for many years. The wife, Ruth Woodward Crouse, died at the latter place, August 22, 1831. John later married the widow of his former wife's brother. The brother's name was Joseph Woodward and his widow's name was Martha.
