Note: Bio: Jacob Crouse was born in Juniana Co., Pennsylvania, his family moved to Palmyria, Portage Co., Ohio in 1833, then moved on to Lordstown, Trumbull Co., but when Jacob married he moved to Polock, Sullivan Co., Missouri. This was shortly after the Mexican War in which he served. Here his family was raised, although they were born in Ohio. I can not locate any census for Jacob or Lydia in 1860, however, I do find son John S and daughter Lydia, living in the home of John Montgomery in Milan, Sullivan Co., Missouri in 1860, at the time of the census.
Military Service: Mexican War -- Jacob Crouse, son of John Crouse, Private in Captain Moore's Company E., 3rd Regiment of Ohio Infantry. Enrolled June 15, 1845 at Wooster, mustered in June 24, at Cincinnati, for twelve months, and was mustered out with his company, June 19, 1847, at New Orleans, LA, aged 26 years. War Dept. The following is extracts from a letter written by Jacob M Crouse to his parents, addressed to John Crouse, Palmyra, Ohio. Mattimorus, Mexico, August 27, 1846 Dear Parents: I ask pardon of you for not writing sooner. Our army is posted at this place to keep it. There are about 6000 Mexicans here at present and 1000 of us from Ohio. It is very hot and sultry. One third of our army is unfit for duty, not being able to stand the climate. I was unwell for some time with chills and fever, but have got hearty as could be expected. The probability is that we must take up our line of march to Monterey in a few days, from what we can learn, to invade the country, and likely on to the City of Mexico which is about nine hundred miles. Signed, J. M. Crouse.
Estate Papers for Adam Shatto: The debts of Adam Shatto appeared to have been paid by Jacob M Crouse, on behalf of the Adam Shatto estate. Full accounting shows what was paid to who, for a total of $1,344.95. A Credit of $357.00 was given, for a total owing to Jacob M Crouse, in the amount of $988.07, as a claim against the estate.
Guardianship Papers: Jacob died before November 15, 1859, as papers were filed, November 15, 1859, for Guardianship of the minor and orphaned children of Jacob M Crouse. The children are Adam, John and Margaret Crouse. There is no mention of wife Lydia Crouse, therefore she must have died before November 15, 1859. Thomas W Peckinpaugh was named Guardian for the minor children. *Note the 1860 Doylestown, Chippewa Township, Wayne Co., Ohio census shows T W Peckinpaugh, 42, as a Lawyer.
