William Robert was born William Robert HARTSOCK, but some time between 1870 and 1880 the spelling changed for the whole family. Verbal family history says one Isaac had a fight with a brother and changed his name from Hartsock to Hartsook. This falls in line with the name change time period.

William Robert was a carpenter by trade, starting out at the age of 12, as a carpenter's apprentice. His father was a farmer and carpenter, as well as his brothers.

By 1880 William Robert and Telitha had a farm in Woodsonville, Hart County. They were farming land next to Telitha's brother, Henry Payton and his family. About 5 or 6 farms away were Telitha's parents and her brothers farms. William's parents were in the nearby community of Hardyville. William Robert's brother, John was living with them at the time of the census in 1880, he was 12 years old. Both Isaac and William Robert moved their families to Louisville, where the City was growing and in need of qualified builders. In 1900 the population of Cairo was growing, and again there was a need for builders, so William Robert moved his family to Cairo, Alexander Co., Illinois. They remained in Cairo for 10 years before moving on. What made them move on to Oregon, no one knows, except again, Portland was growing in leaps and bounds, incorporating small outlining towns. And with the 1905 Lewis and Clark Exposition, made Portland look very desirable to a lot of people.

William Robert Hartsook had several siblings, one of which went to California. He had a farm or ranch, and durning a big Anthrax epidemic, was wiped out. William's nephew, Lemual Key, was said to have gone to visit the "Hartsook" in California several times, in his early 20's. Sadly, I can not confirm if this is correct, as Lemual Key passed away, and his sister only remember's him talking about it, nothing more. It is possible that Charles or Edward may have gone to California, as I have not been able to trace them.

William Robert suffered a stroke on October 5, 1929, and passed away on the 8th of October, at his home. At the time of William Robert's death, he was living at 1518 &1522 Interstate. The house was a duplex, Lemual Hartsook and his family were living in the other half of the house.
