Halford, age 58, of Effingham, formerly of Strasburg and Decatur, died at his home at 5:20 p.m., Thursday, November 10, 2005. A celebration of Larry's life will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, (November 13, 2005) at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Strasburg, Illinois. Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Saturday at the church and one hour before the services on Sunday. Burial will be in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, Strasburg, with military rites by the Strasburg American Legion Post #289. Memorials may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery Fund, Catholic Charities FISH Christmas Store, Strasburg Veteran's Memorial or Lincolnland Hospice. Arrangements by Howe & Yockey Funeral Home, Strasburg. Larry was born on November 29, 1946, in Vandalia, Illinois to Kearney and Evelyn Hicks Halford. He served in the U. S. Armed Forces and was a veteran of the Vietnam Conflict. Larry was a 1964 graduate of Warrensburg Latham High School. He was a graduate of Sangamon State University where he achieved a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and a Master of Arts degree in Business Administration. Larry was employed as an auditor for Standard Companies based in New Orleans. Larry married Kay Lading York of Strasburg on June 23, 2000, and they joyously combined their families. Larry was the loving father of Leah (Brian) Thorp of Sullivan, Wisconsin and Anthony Halford of Kansas City, Missouri. He was the loving step-father of Derrick York (Nikki) of Chicago, Illinois and Dustin York of Peoria. Larry was devoted to his three young grandsons, Clayton, Nathan, and Sawyer Thorp and loved spending time with them. Larry is survived by his wife; children; grandchildren; his mother of Decatur; his sisters, Susan (John) McLaughlan of Decatur, and Carol Jeanne (Paul) Young of Kimberling City, Missouri. He is also survived by sister-in-law Connie (Sanford) Searl of Argenta, Illinois, and brother-in-law Larry (Jean) Lading of Strasburg, Illinois, six nieces and nephews, and five great-nieces and nephews. Larry was preceded in death by his father, an infant brother and young sister, and his brother Charles who was killed during the Vietnam Conflict. Larry served as an escort when his brother's body was returned to this country from Vietnam. Larry Halford was talented at carving and his wooden decoys grace the homes of his family. He also took great pride in his home and landscape. Larry was a tall man with a wide smile and a big heart. He made a point of remembering people's names and could call scores of people his friend. He was a gracious host and an asset to his community. He will be greatly missed by his loving family and the many friends who loved him.
