Ellen's parents were said on her marriage certificate to be Thomas Dowsett, a farmer, and Mary Ann Peckham. The Catherine House records show that Thomas and Mary Ann were married in the Chelmsford registration district of Essex in the October quarter of 1851 (Vol. 12, page 63).

The Index of unassisted passengers from England shows that Ellen (1) emigrated to Victoria on the NORFOLK in 1861 with her family: Thomas (29), Mary Ann (30), Hannah (8), Thomas (3) and Selina (1). The marriage certificate shows that he was a bachelor farmer aged 25 years who was presently living at Serpentine Creek but normally resided at East Charlton in Victoria. Ellen was a 21 year-old spinster who had been born at Chelmsford in Essex and was living at Serpentine Creek with her parents Thomas Dowsett, a farmer, and Mary Ann Peckham. Edward's parents were said to be Edward Owen, a miner, and Elizabeth Evans. The wedding took place at Ellen's parents' home and was officiated over by I.H.M.Lachlan, a Presbyterian minister. The witnesses were James Lemuel Dowsett (Ellen's older brother) and Mary Ann Dowsett.
