    The 1841 census shows John (30) and Elizabeth (30) living at Sand Hole in Brenchley. Also present were their children Elizabeth (14), John (12), Louisa (9), Martha (6), Alice (4) and Edward (5m). All had been born in the county. The family is still there in 1851: John (47), Elizabeth (46), John (21), Louisa (19), Alice (13), Edward (9), Mary (7), Henry (4), Julia (1) and Stephen (1, but not recorded as their son). All except Elizabeth were born at Brenchley (she was born at Goudhurst).

    The following members of the family were still there in 1861: John (61), Elizabeth (59), Mary (18), Julia (16), Amos (9) and his cousin Stephen Jeffery (10) where all were born at Brenchley.
