    41 Mersey View Street,

The 1860 Directory does not note Joel as living at this address (it doesn't note him at all) so it is likely he had moved by this time already.

In the 1850s the closure of overcrowded Liverpool parish graveyards created an urgent need for new out of town cemeteries and, under the terms of the Burial Acts, the big municipal cemeteries were opened. This included one in Toxteth Park in 1856 and it is likely that Joseph is buried here.

The Cemetery registers till exist and are in date order of burial, not name order, and give the following details:

Register (running) number Date of burial
    Name, Age
    Rank or profession Abode
Parish or District Mode of burial
    Section Grave number

    10
  • Event: Age at the time of death Death 26 May 1865 Toxteth Park, Toxteth, Lancashire, England, Great Britain
  • Note:
Joel's death certificate contains dispute over the age of his death. While the initial entry indicated his age as 66 (which would see him born in 1799) an additional column has been included on the certificate indicating his death age was actually 61.

    It reads;

For "66" substitute "61" corrected on the Twentyfifth May 1865 by me H. Buckmaster Registrar in the presence of Hannah Maria Dykes Joseph Dykes. Both in attendance.
    10
  • Occupation: Occupation at time of son's marriage 09 Jan 1869
  • Note:
    Occupation noted as Forgeman.

It should be noted that while this detail is noted, it is as a result of the failure to inform the registrar that Joel had died prior to the wedding.

Salop is another name for Shropshire.

The instances of Joseph/Joel's name and their origin:

Children with the same names (as proof):
The case for Joseph is that Joel and Mary name their first child Joseph. Either based upon Joel's father or Joel himself (with the name Joseph however).
Hannah Maria names her second child Samuel J. J could represent either Joseph or Joel.
Samuel Dykes names his first son Samuel Joseph Dykes.
Benjamin names his second child Joel.

The 1841 Census notes Joseph's birth year as 1806.
The 1861 Census notes Joseph's birth year as 1802.
  • Note:
(Research):Arthur Waring sources Joel's birth location as Tettenhall, Stafford, England. The UK 1851 Census notes it as Salop Ellesmere. Tettenhall is
only about 18 miles from Ellesmere. From Arthur, "There is no other Joel (or Joseph)
having been born at that time (that any of us can find after a great deal of
    searching!)."

The 1861 Census gives the birth location os Shrewsbury, Shropshire.

Arthur also gives the birth date of Feb 1798 and the christening date of March 3, 1798. The 1851 Census is the source of 1806 as the birth year. The 1841 Census also notes 1806.

The 1841 Census notes Joel with the name Joseph, finally concluding the search for the correct name. But it should also be noted that his surname is listed as Joseph Dykes.
