Note: Mahlon Lindley came to Urbana, Illinois, in 1857. There he set up what was to become a lucrative medical practice. In 1864, Dr. Mahlon Lindley and an associate began prospecting for coal in Champaign County. In October, they struck a very rich vein near Urbana. Their discovery set off a mining fever in the area. Dr. Lindley was also chief surgeon for the Big Four Railway Company.
