Ruth: I found your website through Find-a-Grave memorial page for Isaac Turner - he was the brother of my ancestor, Francis Turner who m. Mary Ashworth and died in Ellis Co. TX. Your website is great and I especially appreciate the old photos - I have "borrowed" some to add to the family tree I have on Ancestry.com (McElroy and Odom Tree) It is still very much a work in progress... Again, thannks for the great research and for sharing! LaVerne (McElroy) Markart
8 Mar 20100 Hi LaVerne!
So sorry to take so long to get back with you. Just not enough hours in the day.... Very nice to meet another Turner "cousin"! I have met several cousins online for other ancestors, but never for Turners.
I have oodles of documents and a few pix of Isaac and his wife Sarah, if you are interested. I'd be happy to send them to you. Anything you have, I'd love to trade! I also have Isaac's Civil War Pension file. Also a few "scraps" of his Bible, not easy to read, but I have transcribed them.
I will try to get all my images and docs up to my Picasa Web Albums site today. You are most welcome to download any you need!
Very nice to meet you and please write back!

His Company (A), of Stokes's Regiment, elected himcaptain at the age of eightee n. As shown, he raised a regiment after resigning from the Fifth Cavalry. He wasin quite a number of battles and skirmishes, receiving one wound--probably made by Oscar Woolworth, a Federal--while a wattle was on with Morgan's men at Liberty. After t he war he was delegated to the Constitutional Conventionat Nashville, but refused to sign the schedule because of the poll tax provision as a qualification for voters. He was also United States marshal for the middle district of the State. Shortly afte r the war he, with others, created a sensation Nashville by attacking and wounding Gen. Joseph Wheeler. Colonel Blackburn died in May, 1913.
In Goodspeed's history of the State (biographical section) this statement is made: "Colonel Blackburnwas in several battles, the most important of which were Nashville, Chattanooga, Snow's Hill, and Milton. ... Healso cleared of guerrillas White, Pu tnam, DeKalb, and Jackson Counties by capturing Champe Ferguson, after whicheven Rebel sympathizers felt more secure. He is said to have been in two hundred and seventeen engagements, inall of which he was successful. He was wounded at Liberty." In t he same history it is stated that in 1864R. B. Blackwell's guerrillas made a raid into Shelbyville, Tenn. The depot was guarded by twelve of Blackburn'stroops, who were captured, escorted into the country, and shot.
