Mrs. Bennett was the former Miss Millie Armstrong. They were the parents of several sons and daughters; among those who have lived in San Saba County and have married members of other pioneer San Saba County families are the following: Effie, now Mrs. M. O. Patton of Harmony Ridge; Lola, now Mrs. Sherman Low of Glendale, Wyoming and Wayne B Bennett, who married the former Miss Alice Fox of Shaw Bend. Wayne Bennett is now serving his third term as San Saba County Commissioner of Precinct No. 1. During the active years of his life, Mr Bennett, Sr., was engaged in farming and livestock work. He served as a deputy sheriff during the years when the railroad was being built through San Saba. Ex-Sheriff Hugh Miller is the authority for the statement that Albert Bennett fearlessly and conscientiously performed his duty while serving under him in that capacity, much of the work during a time when it took a real man to handle the situation since construction work usually brings a rather lawless element to a new section. As a young man, Mr Bennett lived in Wyoming and prior to the first World War, he and Mrs. Bennett returned there to live." -------------------------------------------------------------- (received from Greg Henderson) family record Marriages Mr. Albert Bennett Mrs. Millie Armstrong July 29, 1889 Mrs. Effie Bennett Mr. Mark Patton October 20, 1907 Mr. Wayne Bennett Miss Alice Fox Feb. 4, 1912 Miss Lola Bennett Mr. Sherman Low April 13, 1913 Mr. Alvis Bennett Miss Mildred Besst February 18, 1929 Taken from the Family Bible of Albert and Millie Bennett Now in the possession of Travis Bennett, Riverton, Wyoming family record Births Albert Bennett born Aug. 19, 1869 Millie Armstrong Bennett born May 3, 1869 Effie A. JAMA Citation: 88:1920 Cause of Death: angina pectoris; (M) In March, 1884, Dr. Bennett moved to Austin, where he has practiced for the past 37 years. During the first eight years of his practice in Austin he was a member of the firm of Morris and Bennett. For the next fifteen years he was a member of the firm of Bennett and Hudson, and now is the senior partner in the firm of Bennett, Weller and Weller. For nine years he was connected with Seton Infirmary, doing both general practice and surgery, and for eight years he practiced surgery exclusively in the Austin Presbyterian Sanitarium. For sixteen years he lectured on surgical subjects to nursing classes of these hospitals. In 1885 Dr. Bennett was married to Miss Amanda Hume of Austin, who died in 1892. He subsequently married Mrs. Emily (Hostetter) Daniel. Dr. Bennett during his entire professional life has been an active worker for organized medicine. In fact, he has been looked upon by many of his confreres as one of the chief corner stones of that structure. He was a member of the first Board of Councilors, following the reorganization under the then new American Medical Association plan, and shared all of the trials, tribulations and glories of that immortal group. He has, with a brief interval here and there, served continuously since that time?18 years, not counting the intervals just referred to. He has served as both secretary and president of his county and district societies, and has also been a vice-president of the State Medical Association. He has for many years been a Fellow of the American Medical Association and is a member of the American Public Health Association. He is U. S. Pension Examiner at Austin, and served as chairman of the District Board of Medical Examiners throughout the World War. He is a member of the Presbyterian Church and is a Mason of high degree. Dr. Bennett has been a conservative but consistent contributor to medical literature. He was the founder of the Texas Sanitarium, subsequently the Texas Medical News and now Medical Insurance and Health Conservation, to which he contributed much in the way of editorial matter and otherwise. The following are the titles of some of his papers, which were published in various medical journals: "Typhoid Fever, a Case With Unusual Complications;" "Differentiation Between Chancre and Chancroid, with Table;" "A Case of Traumatic Tetanus Successfully Treated by Hot Water Baths;" "Hemorrhoids, Fissures and Fistula in Ano, and Their Treatment;" "Treatment of Pneumonia;" "A Remarkable Case of Elephantiasis;" "A Case of Plantar Neuritis with Resection of the Plantar Cutaneous Nerve, Recovery;" "How to Prevent After Pains;" "Perineal Prostatectomy;" "Splenectomy, Axial Rotation and Death of Spleen, Recovery;" "A Treatment for Fistula in Ano Without a Cutting Operation;" "The First Pan-American Medical Congress;" "The Nation's Sin of Omission;" "Drains and Drainage." The Journal is pleased to present herewith a very good likeness of our honored President. We congratulate the profession on the election .of "this grim-visaged veteran, fresh from the battlefields of misery and sorrow, this gray-haired victor of 10,000 contests with disease and death," to quote from the nominating speech which made him President-elect. He will make us a good President and we are looking to him for results.Page: accessed, downloaded; 3 December 2011; pages 321-322 Handbook of Texas Online, s.v. He shot and killed a guy off his horse in Texas and had to go to Austin to hide out. The sherriff of San Saba, Texas., Hugh Miller, a friend of the Bennett family came to Albert Bennett (brother of James) and told him the law knew Jim was hiding in Austin. Albert took a good horse to Jim in Austin and told him to quit the country or swing from a rope as the man he killed was a prominant individual. He went to Colorado and hired out to a hay contractor, putting up hay for the Army. He went to some Colorado town and got to drinking. There were some black Army troops there and he ended up killingtwo of them. That put him wanted by the Army and the government. He took off from there and hid out at (another brother) George's ranch. George tried to get him to give himself up but Jim left and went to Canada. He robbed a bank, with some gang, in Canada and got the Canadian Mounted Police after him. He left Canada and went thru Montana and spent some time in the Dakotas, hanging around the gold camps. Them he ended up back in Montana and robbed a bank in Webo, Montana. They then planned a bank robbery in Glendive, Montana. The law was apparently waiting for them in Glendive as they were all shot full of holes and killed. He went by the name of Jim Lacy when he was killed in Montana. He also went by the name of Clay at one time or other. After he was killed the law at Glendive sent George a picture of the corpse and asked for a positive identification. He made the identificaiton for Montana authorities and had Jim buried in Miles City, Mt. He paid for the burial. Around 1900-1906. Richard W. There were some black Army troops there and he ended up killing two of them. That put him wanted by the Army and the government. He took off from there and hid out at (another brother) George's ranch. George tried to get him to give himself up but Jim left and went to Canada. He robbed a bank, with some gang, in Canada and got the Canadian Mounted Police after him. He left Canada and went thru Montana and spent some time in the Dakotas, ha! nging around the gold camps. I hope have the name of the Sherriff and Jim will help fill in blanks in San Saba history and my family history. Nedra "BENNETT, Mr. and Mrs. Albert, settled in the Pecan Grove-Harmony Ridge community more than fifty years ago. James Bennett b. 6 Mar 1866 TX d. abt 1906 Glendive, MT James Bennett lived in Texas until he got into trouble. He was a hard case and into trouble wherever he went. Richard W. Nedra "BENNETT, Mr. and Mrs. Albert, settled in the Pecan Grove-Harmony Ridge community more than fifty years ago.
