  • ID: I158
  • Name: John O'NEAL
  • Given Name: John
  • Surname: O'NEAL
  • Suffix: (probable son of Charles)
  • Sex: M
  • Birth: Bet 1775 and 1794 in NC (Of Rowan Co, NC) 1 2 3 4
  • Death: Poss bet 1828-1830 in Poss Rowan Co, NC 5 6 7
  • Residence: Recorded as making purchases at Mocks Old Field 1816 Mocks Old Field, Rowan Co, NC
  • Census: 1820 Census - M33 R80 Page166 (this could be this John, or could be another John) 1820 Iredell Co, NC
  • Census: 1820 Census - A John O'Neal appears to be at M33, R81, Page 206 in Rowan. I belive this entry is for John Nale, however, after closer examination of the census entry 1820 Yadkin, Rowan Co, NC
  • Residence: My best guess is that John O'Neal was enumerated in IREDELL county in 1820, and the 1820 Census entry at M333, R81, P206 is for John Nale, a German, who also lived in the area 1820 Iredell Co, NC
  • Note: NOTE: I belive John O'Neal's property was very near the Iredell / Rowan County line in far eastern Rowan County. His property may have even spanned both sides of the county line. I have not yet been able to determine if his home was in Iredell or Rowan County, and he appears to have been enumerated in these 2 counties at different times, although I doubt that these represent him physically moving.

Is it possible that this John O'NEAL may be the John O'NEAL that is buried in Cleveland County, NC ??

That John was (1775 - 1843 Mar 5). Apparently had at least 4 children (possibly by a 1st wife?)

    - John O'Neal (presumed Jr)
    - Richard O'Neal
    - Malinda O'Neal b: 1799
    - Honour "Mary" O'Neal b: 1804

[NOTE: This is pure speculation at this point. The birth dates do line up however]

    ** 1 **
Presumed to be a younger brother of Thomas O'Neal who married Elizabeth Harries.

Based upon finding a "Thomas O'Neal" signing (with an X) on the wedding record of John O'Neal and Margaret Bracken, I am listing John O'Neal and Thomas O'Neal as brothers.

    ** 2 **
    Additional evidence for relationship:

Hugh O'Neal, John O'Neal and Thomas O'Neal all listed on same census page of 1820 Iredell County Census (page is quasi-alphabetical). Phillip Phillips also listed on this page. This Phillip is assumed to be the Phillip who married Mary O'Neal.

    ** 3 **
Death date listed as before 1830 (probably), based upon finding a Margaret O'Neal as Head of Household in Rowan County on 1830 census. The 1830 Margaret is presumed to be Margaret Brackin O'Neal, with 7 kids (all born after 1815).

At present, my working assumption is that all 7 of these children belong to John O'Neal and Margaret Brackin O'Neal. She later marries Henry Eller, with Henry O'Neal as bondsman at her wedding.

    ** 4 **
John O'Neal appeared as a witness to Iredell County land transaction between James Henson and Charles Berringer. 72 Acres for $100. 15 Aug 1828

    ** 5 **
Iredell County Deed Book J, pp 972 shows a land transaction between William Bracken (of Rowan) and Phillip Phillips for $200 on 15 May 1820. This transaction moves 110 acres from Bracken to Phillips. Property is on waters of 4th creek, joining John O'Neal.

Q: Is it possible John O'Neal had married a daughter of William Bracken a few years earlier? (Margaret Bracken's father is unknown to me at this time)

    ** 6 **
Was listed in the books of Nesbits Store. These records were found in a Davie County library. The store may have been near Mocks old field or may have been in Iredell County.

James O'Neal is recorded as making purchases at Nesbitt's Store in 1816 in Rowan County, NC, near Mocks Old Field. (present day Mocksville) - - as are Thomas O'Neal and Henry O'Neal (support for Henry, James and Thomas as brothers)

John O'Neal is also recorded as making purchases in Nesbitt's Day Book on or about December of 1815, as are James O'Neal, Thomas O'Neal, and Henry O'Neal. For one of Thomas O'Neal's purchases, James O'Neal is listed as security. (support for James, John, Henry and Thomas as brothers).

    ** 7 **
Death date is assumed to be between 1828 and 1830. John O'Neal appears referenced on land records in 1828 (alive), but does not appear in 1830 census (no longer living?). Margaret O'Neal does appear in 1830 census, albeit in Rowan County. This Margaret is presumed to be John's widow, Margaret (nee: Bracken) O'Neal.

    ** 8 **
1820 Census Entry for John O'Neal (in Iredell County) Also have found a John O'Neal in 1820 in Rowan County

2 White Males <10 (presumably William b:1818 and Henry b:1810-1820)
    1 White Male 26-45 (John)
    1 White Female 16-26 (presumably Loverly Ann O'Neal b: 1826 Jun 6)
    1 Whilte Female 26-45 (Margaret)
1 Person engaged in Agriculture (John)

    ** 9 **
There is supposed to be a marriage record indicating that a John O'Neal married Esther Gaskill in 1811 in Rowan County, NC.

I have not as of yet found a reference to this record, nor do I know if this is for this John.
