These Irish families emigrated from Ireland long before the potato famine of the 19th century or the civil wars of the 20th century. They came from Protestant English-speaking areas in County Down and County Dublin to work on the western terminus of the Erie Canal. As employees of the Holland Land Company , they were able to take up land in Cattaraugus County as early as 1829. There were so many Irish families in one part of Mansfield that it became known as Little Dublin.
