      • Title: Charles Ferdinand Seck Pittsford, NY, Route 31, Family Tree of Fredrick Amiel Bonjour, Stockton, IL
History as described by Charles F. Seck 1953. Frederick Amiel Bonjour who, with his wife, Julia, and their first five children, migrated to northwestern Illinois (a hilly country like his native land) from Lignieres, Switzerland, in 1854. (elsewhere it says 1852?)

Frederick Amiel Bonjour moved to Galena 1852 from Switzerland after Lena was born.
To earn passage, he worked his way on board ship with his wife and family of five children in stowage. His cousin, Captain Shetlan, had migrated to Galena, Illinois, about two years previously, had encouraged him to come here, and was on hand to meet the Bonjour family when they docked at Galena on a Fever River barge. The Bonjour family soon started farming in Jo Daviess County.
        (6 Aug 1953)
Text: To them were born 21 children, the youngest of whom was Sophie (Bonjour) Fitzsimmons of Dundee, Illinois. It was my pleasure to meet and learn to know her before she died in 1950--the last of the first generation to pass away.

The characteristics of this family were fierce independence, self-reliance, aggressive friendliness, general love of the great outdoors, a restlessness to be up and doing, with strong vigorous bodies especially in the first generation. For some reason, most likely associated with the low iodine factor common in the Swiss Alps, there is a recurring pattern of a pituitary or thyroid disturbance throughout the Bonjour family, including several succeeding generations.

The inspiration for this work came from two main sources; the first was the curiosity aroused by my father, Frederick Louis Seck, when I was about 9 years old and just before his accidental death, who mentioned that he had so many relatives in Illinois & Iowa that he could not count them, and second, by his first cousin, William F. Bonjour, of Stockton, Illinois, whom with great pleasure I met at his first cousins, and my Aunt Julia (Seck) Wills' funeral at Galena, Illinois in 1947. To meet him, to come to know such an excellent spirit, to learn from him of my family history and to subsequently meet many other cousins like him, has been a great pleasure. It has filled what was somewhat of a void in my orphan life and therfore, in thankfulness and in a spirit of appreciation, I have compiled this tree with the assistance of many of you, for our mutual refrence and satisfaction.
